AI in schools has been a hot topic for a few years now but with new and emerging AI coming out each month, it can be hard to keep up. Some major topics that I see in the school setting are; AI cheating, AI use with students, teachers using AI to do their work, and AI taking over our jobs. I think we all know that AI is ever-emerging so it is time to learn about it and take it for what it is.
I love a good Chatbot to help me get started on a project I am working on, or to re-write an email I was going to send, but I will also be the first to tell people that AI is actually not as great as we think. The negative impact it has on our world is very eye-opening. The amount of electricity the data centers (which house the AI servers) consume is alarming and frankly sometimes makes me re-think how much I want to use AI over just searching the web. If the amount of electricity these bots requires is not alarming enough, they also need crazy amounts of water to cool the servers as well. Here are some crazy stats on AI:
- Generating a single image using AI uses the same amount of energy as charging your phone to 100%.
- The data centers used 4% of the total US electricity in 2023 with a projected jump to 7-12% by 2028.
- A single AI query utilizes 4-5 times the energy of a typical search engine request.
Some things to consider when using AI:
- See if the AI you are using is leaning towards more sustainable options.
- Teach your students the environmental impacts that AI has and why they need to consider this.
- The next time you are playing with AI, be mindful of how many times you are asking it to re-do a photo or change a small task. See if these are things you can do on your own to save up some energy.
